Growing concerns on the ability of global agriculture to meet the demand for food and fibre for an expanding population – particularly for the developing countries, continue to drive essential natural resources such as land and water to a decline both in quality and quantity in a highly food insecure world. Thus, there is in evidence, a deceleration in the yields of food crops, and the disappearance of grazeland. By reason of its location and its climate, soil and hydrology, Niger State has the capacity to produce most of Nigeria’s stable crops; however, yields have declined over a number of years. This book is not necessarily asking why, but pondering on the future of yields, and what must be done to ensure sustainability of what is the livelihood of the State’s citizenry.
