This book focuses on those contradictions that make postmodernism so intriguing and debatable. Starting from the idea that the world of fiction, as a heterogeneous construct, challenges conventions, this study considers that the concept of fictionality is a key term in analysing and decoding postmodernism. Within a universe that is marked by plurality, fragmentariness and indeterminacy, readers are constantly challenged to discover meanings. The textual meanings are provisional that is why traditional forms are no longer considered satisfactory to self-consciously display the elements of literary construction or to render the uncertainties of the contemporary century mind. The context of fiction is redefined and re-experienced and the old, pre-established fictional categories are dismissed or moved to another level of configuration. This book directs attention to John Fowles as he majestically considered that limitations and restrictions come only from the linguistic and artistic field. Readers acknowledge that fiction may reinterpret tradition in its self-awareness and freedom of expression.
