The increase in memberships and popularity has resulted in an overall longing for professionalism and commercial utilisation within Dutch hockey. How can we define which potential issues are involved when discussing this phenomenon in relation to Dutch hockey? Authorities, athletes and other stakeholders all aim for professionalism. However, Dutch hockey is in its infancy when it comes to exploiting commercial opportunities. Radio and television broadcasting, and newspaper coverage are important media to exploit further. In the process of professionalism, there are many stakeholders with different values, interests, and objectives. The Dutch hockey authorities should monitor and clearly articulate the potential implications of the change to all participants. Especially the voluntary sector can have difficulties accepting the business approach within sports. Volunteers are involved in decision making and administration issues at all levels within sport, they have a profound influence on the sports development, and should be approached as such.
