ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN UGANDA

The book Environmental Justice in Uganda comprehensively examines the legal, institutional, and community frameworks shaping environmental justice (EJ) in Uganda’s oil and gas sector, with a focus on community participation, regulatory efficacy, and international comparison. It starts by a conceptual analysis of EJ theories and relevant frameworks, including national and international laws and institutional roles. A critical evaluation of Uganda’s EJ mechanisms in the oil and gas industry is provided, discussing the effectiveness of consultation, grievance mechanisms, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, alongside perspectives from local communities, government, and industry players. The book identifies key challenges, such as weak regulations, limited public engagement, and environmental degradation, but also highlights opportunities for advancing EJ through strengthened governance, community empowerment, and sustainable resource management. Through case studies of global EJ struggles, it draws parallels and offers best practices, concluding with findings, philosophical insights.
