Although there have been hundreds of studies on meditation utilizing many different types of manuals, few if any of the protocols rely exclusively on the Buddhist source culture which their mindfulness-based interventions are based on. In reviewing the literature, Dr. Fallah shows how mindfulness investigators fall into one of three research approaches and he makes an argument for how to coherently apply primary source manuals and paradigms as found within other traditions like Buddhism to current social scientific and clinical discourse. Dr. Fallah reviews the role of metacognition in cognitive psychology and provides important points distinguishing metacognitive insight from metacognitive knowledge. Finally, the results of his study in clinically applying the Buddhist text, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, is presented.
