Trafficking in children, commonly referred to as modern-day slavery, violates the fundamental rights of children, including the right to family- or parental care; he right to be protected from maltreatment, neglect abuse or degradation; and to be protected from exploitative labour practices. Internationally, human trafficking has become the third-largest profit-making criminal enterprise after drugs and weapon trading, generating an estimated seven billion US dollars annually. It is estimated that about 12 300 000 people are trafficked worldwide annually and 1 200 000 of these are children. This book aims to analyse international and national legal measures currently in place to address the issue of child trafficking in South Africa; including the prevention of child trafficking, the protection of child victims of trafficking and the prosecution of traffickers.
