This book tells the story of rural poor farmers in Uganda as they come into contact with the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) initiative under conditions of subsistence farming, market failure and poverty. Featuring some of the key aspects of the contemporary extension thinking notably addressing poverty through market-oriented agriculture and embracing a demand-driven approach to extension, the NAADS initiative is here considered a "prototype" for a new approach to extension. The analysis shows a mismatch between NAADS'' aspirations and the conditions of its largely subsistence and resource poor clients, particularly women and youth. The book offers a useful resource for professionals and policy makers responsible for designing and implementing interventions in constrained rural farming conditions.
