Zambia, like any other third world country, faces a lot of social problems. For the past forty years Zambia has tried to solve its problems but without any success. Zambia''s geographical location as a landlocked country has not helped its cause. Without a seaport to bring in imports and with most of the neighboring countries engaged in civil wars or independence struggle for almost three decades (from the 1970s to the 1990s), Zambia had to spend a lot of money on airlifting most of her imports and exports. This venture had many different kinds of effects on the Zambian economy and on social conditions in general. In the 1970s, 1980s and part of the 1990s the situation was worsened by political turmoil in the neighboring countries. With the relative peace and calm and the independence of the whole Southern African region, Zambia now needs to solve its social problems. Zambia has problems in most of the major sectors of the economy: manufacturing, communications and transport, health, education, social warfare, agriculture and fisheries, energy, and tourism.
