This study explores identity formation within the volatile ‘New City'' London investment banking sector. Existing research has revealed how ‘performance'' has been used to construct identities that align with historically privileged gender and class positions. The thesis examines how performance may play an especially significant role in career furtherance within the context of the New City. In particular it looks at how identity may be constantly re-worked and revised, drawing upon a range of different resources within a highly diverse setting. The research utilises Giddens''(1991) theoretical framework on self-identity, reflexivity and performance. It investigates how a biographical narrative may be maintained via the accommodation of given performances throughout a series of social terrains. The thesis will appeal firstly to identity scholars who concentrate upon narrative, reflexivity and performance; secondly to those who are interested in contemporary career formation either within investment banking or other turbulent industries. It will also be of interest to Human Resources practitioners who specialise in City careers.
