As from 1998 todate the world have witnessed many people being killed by rebel groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) despite of the deployment of almost 20,000 UN Peacekeepers with the mandate to use force to protect civilians.Currently there are little academic literature that exists on the challenges that impedes the UN Mission in DRC from effectively protecting civilians. Previous generalization that the UN Peacekeeping Missions like UNAMIR in Rwanda fails because of the lack of mandate can't hold anymore because the UN Mission in DRC had been given the mandate to use force to protect civilians. This book, therefore, presents critical analysis of the situation and provides, Success and Challenges that impedes MONUC from effectively protecting civilians in DRC.The knowledge and recommendations should be especially useful to the UN and Regional Organizations like African Union, SADC, the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Great Lakes countries as they struggle to develop and implement strategies that will ensure effective protection of civilians and achievement of peace in DRC and Somalia
