As a result of intensive historical investigation has been conducted in Hoi An for this study from 2004, I was able to collect a number of local Chinese materials. Meanwhile, combining with the research of the late Professor Chen Ching-ho on Hoi An Minh Huong village. The publication discusses the formation of the Chinese community in Hoi An and Its members’ commercial activity from 1600 to 1777. First, the publication analyses the establishment of the Chinese Minh Huong xa and Bang (Congregations) system such as the Congregations of Fukienese, Cantonese, Hainanese, Teochew, and Hakka in Hoi An. Another publication examined is the commercial activity of the Chinese in Hoi An with regard to the development of foreign trade of Dang Trong (Southern Vietnam) in the period of Nguyen Lords, in order to understand how the Chinese took advantage of these and other external circumstances in order to attain to undisputed dominance over Hoi An’s commerce and trade. The author do hope that, the publication will contribute a full view of the Chinese diaspora in Hoi An in history.
