The last 20 years have seen substantial changes in schools, with a much greater focus on accountability. The need for accountability necessitates the significance of developing the educational scenario as a mechanism for making schools and classrooms more effective. The net result of the demand for accountability has been the establishment of a new environment for education. Simply stated, the public no longer accepts conditions characterized by (1)increasing educational costs and (2) declining learner scores on measures of academic performance. They want the teacher community to give an account of the ever increasing expenditure on education.A systematic study regarding the accountability of teachers has largely remained an unexplored area of research. Realising that there are many misconceptions about accountability of teachers and that there is a pressing need to make an objective investigation in this area, this problem has been selected and an attempt has been made to arrive at some conclusions which would be of immense interest to educational administrators, school heads/principals and teacher community at large as well.
