The burning of vegetation is a very common practice in Ghana especially in the savanna zones. However, very little local scientific information is available about the impact of the practice on the environment. Inside this book you will find information about biomass density of the coastal savanna ecosystem of Ghana with specific information on live and dead biomass available. Greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and oxides of nitrogen emitted due to biomass burning were estimated using IPCC 1996 revised guidelines for emissions estimation. Carbon dioxide as well as water vapour emitted were also estimated by trapping these products through a closed chamber combustion in the presence of excess oxygen.
