This study investigates viewers’ perception of the portrayal of ritual themes in Nigerian home videos and their influence on cultural values. Using a survey method, data were collected from 392 respondents in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State. Findings reveal that ritualism, along with violence, sex and corruption, are dominant themes in Nollywood movies, with ritual themes often exaggerated and normalized by viewers. The portrayal of rituals has contributed to shaping public opinions, presenting Nigeria as a bloodletting nation, and influencing cultural perceptions both locally and internationally. The study concludes that Nollywood films should prioritize constructive representations of Nigerian culture and recommends regulatory frameworks to promote positive cultural narratives.
