The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of the dominant type of the lower extremity superficial veins, and to determine the eventual influence of such variations to the formation of superficial and DVT.The sample used in this study consisted of 180 patients subjected to ascendent contrast phlebography of lower extremities. The total sample was divided into following groups: patients with and without variations of the lower extremity superficial veins. Most common variations of superficial veins of lower extremities were duplicated forms of v. saphena magna and topographical variations of saphenopopliteal junction. All the groups in the study showed increased number of women, both in presence of superficial veins variations and in diagnosing varicose and thombotic changes in veins. This investigation could not set a correlation between the existence of variations of superficial veins of lower extremities and appearence of superficial and DVT.
