Alleviate Electricity Crisis in Bangladesh

Electricity is a key ingredient for the socio- economic development of the country. Adequate and reliable supply of electricity is an important pre- requisite for attracting both domestic and foreign investment. But frequent power failure has turned out to be a national crisis in Bangladesh. Therefore, the Government has given top priority for the development of the sector considering its importance in overall development of the country. The current 158 KWh per capita consumption of electricity in Bangladesh is one of the lowest in the world and only 38% population has the access to electricity. Providing electricity to all by 2020 creates a huge opportunity for private investment in Bangladesh and the government is keen to promote private investment in power generation by providing significant fiscal incentives and other incentives for investors through Private Power Generation Policy adopted in 1996.
