This research was aimed at isolating and characterizing crude oil degrading bacteria from soil samples at the shore line around the flow station at Gelegele River, Ovia North East Local Government, Edo State. The specific objectives of this research were to:1. determine the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content in the soil2. determine the presence of polycyclic aromatic in the polluted soil3. determine the physiochemical properties of the hydrocarbon polluted soil4. enumerate, isolate and characterize the total heterotrophic bacterial and the total hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria.5. screen the bacterial isolates for hydrocarbon utilizing potential6. carry out bioremediation reaction using shake flask experiment7. determine the extent of n-alkane degradation at the end of shake flask experimentation8. determine if the degrading ability of the bacteria lies in the plasmid DNA or chromosomal DNA9. identify the bacteria to species level using 16S rRNA.
