In course of the present research, composition of foam-filled multi tubes was studied by compression testing at quasi-static deformation rates. The Al-closed cell foams, used for the filling of tubes, were manufactured at AMPRI, Bhopal by using a patented process (melt route foaming). The stress-strain curve in all the tested foam samples was found to be similar. All the samples had four characteristics, an initial linear elastic region, yield point, plateau, and densification region. The densification strain was almost invariant to the relative density and the strain rate. The plateau stress was found to depend highly upon the relative density of Al-alloy. For each tube geometry investigated, the average crushing load and the quantity of specific energy absorption were calculated and the results were compared. Compression results revealed that when compared with empty tube samples, the energy absorption rate in the foam-filled samples increases considerably. The foam-filled section of tubes was found to have the maximum specific energy absorption rate. Energy absorption capacity in the foam-filled tubes (mild steel and aluminium) samples was found to increase with higher plateau.
