The historic heritage of New Zealand is a unique resource but is it valued in a manner that is effective, appropriate and sustainable? This book examines the extent to which an effective system for valuing and assessing the sites, buildings, places, areas and landscapes of archaeological and historic significance to Maori and Pakeha exists at present. Evidence from international practice identifies a set of effective system characteristics for assessing historic heritage. This is contrasted to existing frameworks in New Zealand, supported by surveys of professional and non-professional opinion of the heritage assessment process. Significant shortcomings within existing frameworks are identified, however, it is suggested that considerable opportunities exist to improve the assessment of historic heritage in ways that will enhance and sustain its value for the future. This book should be of interest to heritage professionals and archaeologists working in the central field of assessment practice
