The essence of this book is the consequence of modernity: the rise of the Nation-state, which defines and protects its space from outsiders; and the relative easiness of crossing physical borders. The mean of protection from outsiders that the State utilizes is a very useful engine of securing its borders and resources, known as ethnicity (or ethnic identity applied for an individual). States protects its borders not from anyone but from those State would get less value in distributing its available resources to. The latter are those who will not support it, nor will grant their loyalty for that particular entity. Individuals as well try to maximize their relative social position, investing their efforts in the field, which produces the most effective and inexpensive results. The book examines the dynamics of this state-individual interaction on the wave of massive Jewish immigration from USSR-FSU starting late 1980th and the following decade. This wave of immigrants had settled in USA, Israel and Germany, each offering them a different mode of inclusion and association. The country-individual interaction had been then analyzed through Internet survey and statistical analysis.
