The Arizona Department of Transportation has been interested in reducing the effects caused by gasoline and diesel spills in roadways incidents using cost-effective and environmentally friendly methods. This project was designed to determine the effectiveness of various bioremediation agents in reading the concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) and diesel fuel in representative Arizona soils. Three soil types, two bioremediation solutions and added nutrients were tested to determine whether the BTEX and diesel levels were decreased faster than natural remediation. Samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. For BTEX, the two bioremediation solutions (Micro Blaze, Hidro Clean) as well as added nutrients in form of Miracle Grow decreased BTEX concentration to below the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) soil remediation levels in all three soil types with a 21 days. However, diesel samples did not show a fast decline in the presence of bioremediation agents.
