From covering rape trials and reporting on house fires to writing about student death and working 40 hours a week – sometimes for no pay, there''s more behind what you see in college student newspapers. Across the country, tens of thousands of college students balance classes, their personal lives and the hours they spend each day at the student newspaper, sometimes not realizing the cost to themselves. In this work, Gutsche, a journalist and educator, attempts to address those interested in the development and experiences of college student journalists, the students themselves, and those who work with student reporters. Through the stories of ten college student journalists who work on independent college student newspapers, Gutsche reveals potential questions for future research surrounding this population. By voicing their struggles with identity formation, balancing career and academic planning, these journalists help uncover potential needs and challenges of these students on our college campuses.
