Shelter by itself is not the only determinant of satisfactory housing. It is a unit which forms part of a whole range of systems that make up housing satisfaction. Current realities in developing nations suggest that the design and development of most government-built and private-rental urban housing have been based on developers'' standards rather than on users'' preferences and needs. Consequently, these housing schemes become irrelevant to the end users because of lack of adequate consideration given to the issue of appropriate shelter. The task confronting policy-makers, planners and stakeholders in housing development therefore, is how to identify and characterize the chain of factors of the dwelling''s and those extraneous to it as inputs in the conceptualization of housing design. Previous attempts along this line have been cursory and fragmentary. Using a "system approach", this book provides an insight into investigating Users'' residential satisfaction. It thus generates a framework for improving the living standard of the targeted endusers by offering a feedback to guide housing professionals and government agencies in formulating appropriate policies for housing development.
