Since its inception in 1920, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry, has come a long way, from four or five members to about 2000 members or even more. Through its journey it has quite naturally left its imprint on the tangible and intangible cultural resources of the area, which makes it an interesting study. As Auroville is a follower organisation of the Ashram’s vision and mission, contributing towards changes both in rural scape and urban scape, a special focus is made on the activities of Auroville in this context. The present study intends to explore Sri Aurobindo Ashram and its sister organisation Auroville as social identities over time and space, considering both local and regional perspectives.
