The impact of cancer is far greater than mere numbers. Its diagnosis causes immense emotional trauma and its treatment, a major economical burden, especially in a developing country like India. Cancer is one such disease, where the financial burden of treatment is a major source of stress for patients and families. The burden of cancer is still increasing worldwide despite advances for diagnosis and treatment. Epidemiological studies have shown that many cancers may be avoidable. It is widely held that 80–90 percent of human cancers may be attributable to environmental and lifestyle factors such as tobacco, alcohol and dietary habits. Expenditure on these factors lead to reduced mortality and enhanced time availability for earning income. Cancer is one of the most important causes of morbidity and the magnitude of the problem is gigantic. Its burden on the economy for providing health care will be substantial. The study is unique in its examination of cost incurred, source of finance, awareness and enrolment of health insurance schemes among the poor cancer patients in the government hospital of Coimbatore city, Tamil Nadu.
