At the current moment of the development of a theology ─or various theologies─ of or for the Caribbean, one needs to define more than one word. Theology itself needs to be re defined and re examined in the context of the religious experience of the people from this region. One of the achievements of 20th century theories of knowledge and culture has been the increasing awareness that the way things are perceived is intrinsically linked with the background of the “perceiver”. In the light of these developments in the field of knowledge and culture theories, Caribbean thinkers and social agents are now becoming increasingly aware that history, culture and economics have been critical factors in the shaping of the discourse about and from the Caribbean. Idris HAMID and Kortright DAVIS have been two people who attempted to articulate the co ordinates that should steer such change and give the necessary sense of coherence. We have set ourselves as our goal in this paper to offer a bird''s eye view of the developments of Caribbean theology in the 70''s, the 80''s and the 90''s.
