In the recent years, large-scale bioregions have been promoted as the most appropriate scale for nature protection. Among others, bioregional scale supports the establishment of transfrontier conservation areas across state borders. It is claimed that the creation of bioregions and transfrontier conservation areas place the protection of biodiversity at the appropriate scale and it leads to the removal of colonial borders that have disrupted ecological systems and local communities. Despite the widely shared interests on transfrontier conservation areas, a large portion of academic literature has neglected the process that constructs scale and how it relates to the impacts of these areas. This book explores the process with the view that an adequate understanding of the bioregional process is a precondition for a proper analysis of the effects that transfrontier conservation areas have on local communities in Africa. It is envisioned that the book will be useful to students of geography and nature conservation, planners and decision makers who are responsible for the creation of transfrontier conservation areas
