The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family styles and adventure program participation on an individual's change in intrinsic motivation. Previous family style studies (Rathunde, 1996; 2001) have indicated that an individual's family style affects his subjective perceptions and behaviors in different social situations. This study examined whether different family styles resulted in different levels of intrinsic motivation in regard to adventure program participants. In addition, adventure programs, which consist of adventurous activities and structured programs, satisfy the needs of competence, autonomy and relatedness, which are known to promote intrinsic motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2002; Witt & Caldwell, 2005). Therefore, this study is based on the hypothesis that participating in an adventure program may change an individual's level of intrinsic motivation.
