Municipal waste generation per person and per household is progressively decreasing whilst recycling rates are increasing in all districts/boroughs in Leicestershire from 2001-2006 and expectations for further increase in subsequent years are high. This is a sound basis proving that the Leicestershire Municipal Waste Management Strategy is indeed having positive effect in waste minimisation and recycling behaviour amongst its residents.Leicestershire have segregated their waste management strategy into: 1. Short term- focuses on source separation geared towards food waste kerbside collection, green waste kerbside collection and diversion of biodegradable waste from RHWS networks and has embarked on encouraging residents to get involve in composting scheme. 2. Medium term- ensures diversion of biodegradable waste from landfill. 3. Long term- ensures diversion of biodegradable residual waste from landfill. It is a credit to note that with the implementation of the LMWMS all the districts in the county actually met with ease the 30% Government targets in 2004/05 and some even did more than expected.
