This book examines U.S. women's struggle to achieve full citizenship rights and to resolve expatriation problems, as represented in U.S. women's fiction from 1868 to 2004. This struggle has been shaped by discourses of nationalism, race uplift and development. The book investigates first, second and third wave U.S. women's rights activism regarding citizenship and expatriation concerns. The fiction discussed in the book argues forcefully for U.S. women citizens' need for the right to make decisions regarding citizenship and expatriation concerns and their need to ensure ethical benefits, both domestic and foreign, for the U.S. nation-state.
