Older childbearing has become increasingly common in high income countries related to changing patterns of smaller families and greater female participation in the workforce. The journey to motherhood is considered socially onerous for women over 35 years, particularly for career women. On the one hand, these women are considered to be highly represented in postnatal depression statistics while on the other hand they are considered to be well informed, proactive and resourceful. Against this contradictory background, this qualitative study aimed to evaluate the experiences of a group of first time mothers aged more than 35 years. The study found a need for additional support during the first 3 months postpartum, however, by 6 months, most participants had become confident mothers and were overwhelmingly positive about their experiences. Participants used services and phoned for advice more than perhaps younger mothers, however, they did not demonstrate the high levels of post-natal maladjustment associated with this group.
