History and Philosopy of Social Work

Social work is an academic discipline and profession that concerns itself with individuals, families, groups and communities in an effort to enhance social functioning and overall well-being. Child and family social workers protect vulnerable children and support families in need of assistance. Social workers help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. Clinical social workers also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues. Social workers most often work in the following settings: Hospitals, medical clinics, and nursing homes. Community mental health agencies and substance misuse clinics. State and local governments including child welfare agencies and departments of health and human services. Being a social worker is often a challenging, yet rewarding career. Social workers are responsible for helping individuals, families, and groups of people to cope with problems they're facing to improve their patients' lives.
