Pearlmillet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. emend. Stuntz] is one of the major cereal crops grown in arid and semi arid regions of the world. It can be grown on light textured soil under low moisture conditions. It probably has the greatest yield potential among all the millets and is extensively cultivated as dual purpose crop for food and forage. Globally, it ranks sixth in area followed by wheat, rice, barley and sorghum. Among the major food grain crops of India, pearlmillet is an important staple food crop and ranks fourth in acreage next to rice, wheat and sorghum. Pearlmillet is grown in Africa and Asia since prehistoric time and it is popularly known as ‘bajra’ or ‘bajri’ in India.
