The prominent absence of women from history that is taught at schools often goes unnoticed. Within the male-dominated societies of our times, the information we are given contains wars, death and destruction, caused by man-made hierarchical institutions. Moreover, the religious ideals that have accompanied these societies support this violence and ultimately the subordination of women with the same force. This book offers an insight into the traditions and symbols of the egalitarian Goddess religion, which the evidence shows that predates poly- and monotheism; the gradual suppression and demonization of the Goddess and, concordantly, the women she represents, are dealt with. Furthermore, the Romantic Period in English literature is singled out as a time of revival for the Goddess, which is emphasised through the analysis of the poem "Lamia" by John Keats.
