Youth Polytechnics in Kenya are a joint venture between communities and the Kenyan government. The Kenya government is in charge of the curriculum and payment of teachers while the communities engage in the provision of buildings and day to day management. The polytechnics enroll primary school youths who do not qualify to join secondary school or form four leavers who have no chance of furthering their education. The polytechnics provide valuable skills in carpentry and joinery, electrical works, mechanic, mansion and plumbing as well as cookery and dress making. Youth polytechnics graduates mainly start their own enterprises in the informal sector or get employed in other small businesses after graduation.
