Gandhi is one of the most well-known persons in history. First and foremost, he is known for his connection to Indian politics and the struggle for Indian independence. This book is focused on two of Gandhi's social campaigns in the beginning of the 1930s. First, the temple-entry campaign was initiated with the goal of ensuring untouchables in Indian society access to Hindu temples. Second, a travelling campaign against untouchability was started where Gandhi and an entourage travelled to several hundred villages where they attempted to open temples, wells, schools and promote Gandhi's ideas for Indian societies. In addition to providing an in-depth study of the two campaigns - including several regional examples - this book also provides examples of Gandhi's rhetoric, response to the two campaigns from Indians and an insight to Gandhi's attempts at mobilising Indian society.
