Higher education has always been regarded as an important factor in the development of societies. The experience of Africa with higher education shows that this subsystem of education since the 1960s was regarded as a sign of hope in lifting the continent from poverty. This book analyses the course of development discourses deployment to understand Africa's fate. More specifically, the book explores how historically Mozambique embraced neoliberal ideology in the context of global processes in the 1980s and 1990s and how neoliberal discourses on development have been used to steer higher education in particular direction in the country in the past fifteen years. The book undertakes an analysis of specific technologies of hope to understand how globalization process is evoked and how neoliberal ideologies on development are effected in the broad society. The result of such transformations is a higher education for more technologist development with very little attention to the social and human sciences as the cornerstone in understanding development challenges of the country.
