The Stone Column technique is one of the most widely-used ground improvement processes in the world, although its potential for improving Irish sites has yet to be fully exploited. Historically the system has been used to densify loose granular soils, but over the past 35 years, the system has been used increasingly to reinforce soft cohesive soils and mixed fills. This book is described the technique and history of stone columns based on experimental works in the world. The vibrating pore breaks down the pores of the surrounding soil, thereby densifying the soil. The crushed aggregates or the gravel that is poured in takes the place of the soil and keeps up the pressure on the soil that was created by the vibrating probe. These columns are made across the area to be built on in a grid pattern at regular intervals. This book, therefore, provides a review of stone columns and soil improvement based on experimental works.
