The subject of x-rays is one of the best examples of the importance of research in pure science. In fact, of all the discoveries made in XIXth century physics, there is none that attracted attention more quickly than x-rays. Crystallography, the branch of physics, in which X-ray diffraction is the most common experimental method of obtaining a detailed structure of a molecule. It allows resolution of individual atoms, single crystal X-ray diffraction is performed by analyzing the pattern of X-rays diffracted by an ordered array of many identical single crystals. In single crystal X-ray diffraction method, crystal of a sample under study is bombarded with an X-ray beam from different angles and resulting patterns are measured and recorded. With the help of this diffraction patterns, a unit cell can be constructed which gives the average atomic positions, bond lengths and relative orientations of the molecules within the crystal.
